Prostate Cancer Surgery

There are three types of prostate cancer surgeries as the prostate treatment, which are standard non-nerve sparing surgery, standard nerve sparing surgery, and radical prostatectomy.

Standard Non-Nerve Sparing Surgery will involve a wide cut in the prostate area to ensure that all the cancer is removed and nothing is left behind. In this surgery, nerves will be cut and removed to ensure that the body is clear from the cancer.

Standard Nerve Sparing Surgery will not remove the whole nerves. Instead, the nerves will be spared. In this type of surgery, the nerves will be left intact, only part close to the edge of the prostate will be removed. With this type of surgery, it is hoped that the natural potency of the semen will be preserved.

In Radical Prostatectomy, the surgeon will make the incision in the perineal area, which is between scrotum and rectum, or it can also be in the lower abdominal region. Radical Prostatectomy surgery is a better option than radiation, especially for patients whose his gleason score is 8,9, or 10. This surgery is normally used to treat people with prostate cancer stages I, II, and III. Some surgeons can also perform laparoscopic surgery with the help of a surgical robot.
