Prostate Cancer Stage

Statistics have shown that 3% of men’s death cases are linked to prostate cancer. Prostate cancer can be diagnosed through a blood test, called Prostate Specific Antigen test. If the cancer is detected from this test, the doctor will conduct additional tests to understand how far the cancer has spread. Which then, the doctor will be able to determine the patient’s prostate cancer stage.

Depending on the prostate cancer stage and how far it has spread, some options are available to treat prostate cancer. In general, there are three types of prostate cancer treatments, those treatments are radiation treatment, surgery and “wait and see”.

Radical prostatectomy is one of the prostate cancer surgical procedures, which removes prostate gland and the nearby lymph nodes. The selection to have this treatment is depending on the prostate cancer stage. General anesthesia is required whilst undergoing this procedure. A catheter is required to be inserted into urethra in order to pass urine for a few days. And after four weeks, the patient will be able to return to normal activity. However, the full bladder control can only be regained after a few months.

The success rate of prostate cancer surgery and the post surgical complications will depend on how early the cancer is detected or the prostate cancer stage. The post surgical complications will be minimized if prostate cancer is still in the early stages, where the cancer has not spread to the surrounding nerves and tissue. If the cancer is still at the early stage and contained within the prostate, it will be easy for the surgeon to remove only the prostate, without having to remove other nerves. This also means the surgeon does not need to remove the nerves which have function to control an erection.

In most cases, radical prostatectomy procedure will be able to remove all the cancer from the body. The success rate of this type of surgery is very high, as the prostate cancer is a very slow growing type of cancer. However, complications or side effects might exist with radical prostatectomy procedure. Therefore, an extended post prostate cancer surgery examination should be done to ensure that the side effects can be taken care and the cancer will not reoccur.
