Prostate Cancer Surgery

Prostate cancer surgery can only be done when it is really required to do so. The surgery is normally limited with the cancer at stages I, II, and III. Prostate cancer surgery will not be an option if the cancer is far too advanced.

There are three types of prostate cancer surgery, which are standard non-nerve sparing surgery, standard nerve sparing surgery, and radical prostatectomy.

1. Standard Non-Nerve Sparing Surgery

This prostate cancer surgery will involve a wide cut in the prostate area to ensure that all the cancer is removed and nothing is left behind. In this surgery, nerves will be cut and removed to ensure that the body is clear from the cancer.

2. Standard Nerve Sparing Surgery

This prostate cancer surgery will not remove the whole nerves. Instead, the nerves will be spared. In this type of surgery, the nerves will be left intact, only part close to the edge of the prostate will be removed. With this type of surgery, it is hoped that the natural potency of the semen will be preserved. However, patient should know that the natural potency of semen might still decrease after the surgery.

3. Radical Prostatectomy

In this prostate cancer surgery, the surgeon will make the incision in the perineal area, which is between scrotum and rectum, or it can also be in the lower abdominal region. Radical Prostatectomy surgery is a better option than radiation, especially for patients whose his gleason score is 8,9, or 10. This surgery is normally used to treat people with prostate cancer stages I, II, and III. Some surgeons can also perform laparoscopic surgery with the help of a surgical robot. The surgery will remove the entire prostate and the seminal vesicles. The surgeon will reconnect the urethra to the bladder so that the patient will be able to void normally. However, with this surgery might leave the patient impotent (not able to gain erection)

You also need to know that there are some complications after the prostate cancer surgery which are not favorable, such as impotence, incontinence, inability to control urine after surgery, Loss of ejaculation, Loss of fertility, or other complications that are related to any form of surgery.
