There are many cases of enlarged prostate problem found at the men with the age of more than 50 years old. This problem normally has symptoms like difficulty to start urination, weak urination’s flow, or frequent urination. An enlarged prostate is an early warning signs of prostate cancer. And statistically, prostate cancer is known to be the second largest cause of cancer deaths among men. Therefore, man who has those symptoms need to seek medical advice and to get the right prostate cancer therapy.
Prostate cancer is the type of cancer who grows slowly. At the early stage of the disease, the symptoms do not show up very clearly. Until it has reached the later stage, the symptoms will be clear, which will make it more difficult to treat. And when prostate cancer has developed to the later stage, the symptoms will include: back pain, pain in hips and thighs, drastic weight loss, and feeling of tiredness. In the advanced stage of prostate cancer, prostate cancer therapy will be more complicated.
Surgery or radiation prostate cancer therapy are the most common therapy for prostate cancer. When the prostate cancer is still at the early stage, chemotherapy generally is not an option at this stage. Normally, when the cancer is still at the early stage, surgery is the common method to treat the cancer.
Other method of prostate cancer therapy is radiation therapy. With this method, the cancer cells will be killed without killing the adjacent healthy cells. There are two common radiation therapy methods, which are seed therapy and external beam radiation therapy.
With seed therapy, a small amount of radioactive material (seed) is implanted in the prostate. In two years, the prostate cancer is expected to be killed. In the external beam therapy, a beam is aimed at the area around the cancer. If the cancer has spread, the radiation can be aimed in the affected area. This prostate cancer therapy normally will take +/- 5 days a week over +/- 7 weeks period.
It is important to know that prostate cancer radiation treatment may cause some side effects, such as impotence, incontinence, and fatigue. However, not every patient suffer these side effects, as the condition might differ from one patient to the other patient.
Generally, the chance of successful treatment in the early stage of prostate cancer is much higher than at the later stage. Therefore, it is recommended for men over the age of 50 to have a yearly check up to detect any early indication of prostate cancer and to get the right prostate cancer therapy.
