Prostate Cancer Radiation

Some people might have a burning question in their mind, is prostate cancer radiation the best option for prostate cancer therapy? Here is the answer; even though radiation is considered to be the good option, the answer will depend on the condition of the patient, as well as the stage of the cancer.

For man who is around 50 years old, prostate cancer radiation might be the best option to treat prostate cancer. However, for man who is around 80 years old, it might not be the best option for him.

In general, younger men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer can get more benefit from radiation therapy or prostate cancer radiation, compared with the older men. It is also proven that the success rate to cure the cancer is much higher if prostate cancer is diagnosed early. The radiation therapy to treat prostate cancer can be done by implanting “radiation pellets” in the patient’s body to remove the cancer, or can also be an external radiation therapy. Most of the time, radiation therapy patient will be able to return to work within few days.

Other than radiation therapy or prostate cancer radiation, the only chemical treatment available to treat prostate cancer is hormone injections treatment. The injections will stop the production of testosterone in the man’s body. It is important to note that this treatment will stop the patient’s reproduction ability. And it is also important to know that surgical or radiation treatments might cause unfavorable side effects to the patients, which are incontinence and impotence.

However, most of prostate cancers are slow growing in older men. But since the treatment can cause pain and complications in older men (which might be worse than living with cancer), the best treatment might be watchful waiting.

For the best treatment, you should ask your doctor advice to decide what type of treatment is the best for you.
