Advanced Prostate Cancer Symptoms

Advanced prostate cancer symptoms could be seen from a symptom of enlarging prostate in a man’s body. This symptom normally involves some prostate related problems such as difficult to start urination, frequent urination, or weak flow in urination. However, a man with prostate enlargement does not always mean that he has prostate cancer. However, at the later stage of prostate cancer, the patient normally also has other symptoms like feeling of tiredness, pain in hips, thighs and back, or weight loss. Therefore, the man who has these symptoms should have a medical check immediately to get a proper medical treatment.

It is important to know that the chance of successful treatment is high if the prostate cancer is still at the early stage. However, if the advanced prostate cancer symptoms are discovered at the later stages, the chance of success will drop dramatically. Therefore, it is important for men over 50 years old to have regular prostate cancer check.

Most of the time, depends on the advanced prostate cancer symptoms, prostate cancer will be treated by surgery or radiation therapy. In the early stages of prostate cancer, surgery is the common method to treat the cancer. However, as there are some risks involved with the surgery, many patients choose radiation therapy instead. In radiation therapy, the emitted radiation will kill the cancer cells and will not kill the adjacent healthy cells.

There are two types of radiation therapy, which are radiation seed therapy and external beam radiation therapy. In seed therapy, a small amount (or a seed) of radioactive material is implanted in the prostate. The seed will remain implanted for about two years, which the cancerous cells will be killed at this period of time. In an external beam radiation therapy, patient will not experience any pain during the procedure. The beam is aimed at the prostate cancer affected areas. This treatment normally takes five days a week within a seven weeks period. However, the doctor will decide which treatment needs to be done for the patient, depending on the test result and the advanced prostate cancer symptoms the patient has.

There are some side effects reported from the radiation treatments. These side effects are including impotence, incontinence and fatigue. However, not all patients have these side effects, as the condition may vary from one patient to other patients.
