Prostate Test

Many men will be panic if they hear about prostate test, especially those who is above the age of fifty, where the risk of having prostate cancer is higher. Therefore, it is very important for men with the age of fifty or over to check for prostate cancer periodically. Recent studies have showed that fifty percent of prostate cancer cases are diagnosed with men with the age fifty or above.

Within existing prostate cancer cases, it likely that certain racial groups are more prone to prostate cancer than other racial groups. Americans, African-Americans and Europeans are more prone to prostate cancer compare with Asian. However, for Asians who live in US or Europe for an extended period of time could have been more prone to prostate cancer too. Therefore, prostate test is important to the group of people who have more risk of having prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer Tests

First method of prostate test is with the doctor inserting his gloved finger through the anal tract to feel patient’s prostate gland. By doing this, the doctor will be able to check if the patient has an enlarged prostate. However, an enlarged prostate is not the only cause of prostate cancer.

Second method is by performing an ultrasonic scan, which can be used to check the size and shape of the prostate. The ultrasonic probe will be inserted into the anal tract. This scan or prostate test will accurately reveal the condition of patient’s prostate.

Third method is by having a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test. Nowadays, this prostate test is the most common test for detecting prostate cancer. If from the blood test it is revealed that the level of the antigen is on the high side, then this might be an indicator of prostate cancer. However, some conditions might case the increase of PSA levels, therefore, some other tests should be done to verify the result.

Forth prostate test method is by performing a biopsy. This procedure will involve taking small sample from the prostate to be analyzed. A small probe will be inserted into the anal tract, which then a needle will poke the prostate to obtain a sample.

If it is suspected that prostate cancer is present, then an x-ray prostate test will be conducted in the area near to the prostate. In many cases, prostate cancer can spread in the lymph nodes and nearby bones, therefore, an x-ray will be able to show possible damage to the nearby bones area.
