Prostate Treatments

Most of prostate cancer diseases are found in men at the age of 50 or older. There are some prostate cancer treatments available, which will be explained in this article.

Prostate Cancer Hormone therapy

Study has shown that there is a strong correlation between testosterone’s production and the prostate cancer growth. By blocking the production of testosterone, the cancer’s growth can be effectively reduced or even stopped. There are some drugs, which can be used to block testosterone’s’ production, those are subcutaneous injection or oral medication. There are some side effects reported from this type of prostate treatment, but those are rarely serious.

Prostate Cancer Radiation therapy

The radiation prostate treatment works by implanting “radiation pellets” in the patient’s body to remove the cancer, or can also be an external radiation therapy. In this type of therapy, patient will be able to return to work within few days. These treatments are known as beam therapy and brachytherapy. With beam therapy, the patient will be placed in a linear accelerator. Then, beams of radioactive particle will be fired to the patient’s prostate to remove the cancer. Currently, there is a beam therapy technique where the beam can match the shape of the prostate. The benefit of this technique is that the other tissue will not be damaged

Prostate Cancer Surgery

There are three types of prostate cancer surgeries as the prostate treatment, which are standard non-nerve sparing surgery, standard nerve sparing surgery, and radical prostatectomy.

Standard Non-Nerve Sparing Surgery will involve a wide cut in the prostate area to ensure that all the cancer is removed and nothing is left behind. In this surgery, nerves will be cut and removed to ensure that the body is clear from the cancer.

Standard Nerve Sparing Surgery will not remove the whole nerves. Instead, the nerves will be spared. In this type of surgery, the nerves will be left intact, only part close to the edge of the prostate will be removed. With this type of surgery, it is hoped that the natural potency of the semen will be preserved.

In Radical Prostatectomy, the surgeon will make the incision in the perineal area, which is between scrotum and rectum, or it can also be in the lower abdominal region. Radical Prostatectomy surgery is a better option than radiation, especially for patients whose his gleason score is 8,9, or 10. This surgery is normally used to treat people with prostate cancer stages I, II, and III. Some surgeons can also perform laparoscopic surgery with the help of a surgical robot.
